Curiosity’s Journey

May 18, 2024

In twenty fourteen, I ventured forth,
To a land where history’s tales are spun,
Palestine, a name that whispered to my curiosity,
A voyage begun under an eager sun.

I stepped onto its soil, naive, yet yearning,
No knowledge but a heart filled with quest,
In the streets and shadows, stories were unfolding,
Truths starkly etched, putting my mind to test.

I saw the children, eyes wide with questions,
Homes shattered by conflicts long and old,
Yet amidst the rubble, their spirits undaunted,
Innocence clung to them, brave and bold.

Through alleys narrow, under skies heavy,
Echoes of anguish clung to the air,
Yet what struck me deepest was not just the sorrow,
But the world’s indifference, the unspoken despair.

People, distant, yet so close in heart,
Turned blind eyes to the cries of the land,
In silence they stood, accepting the shadows,
Their hands clean, yet blood on the sand.

Questions rose, unbidden, within my soul,
Why this silence? Why this apathy’s grip?
How could humanity turn away so lightly,
From the suffering held in a child’s trembling lip?

The world kept spinning, indifferent and cold,
To the fate of those caught in the strife,
And I stood there, an observer, an outsider,
Witness to the harsh truths of life.

Returning home, my heart heavy with tales,
I found my circle, once close, now so far,
They turned away, unwilling to listen,
Comfortable in ignorance, avoiding the scar.

Was it Israel’s might that silenced their ears?
Or the pain too great for them to bear?
The questions lingered, unanswered, relentless,
As I grappled with a newfound despair.

My life, forever altered by what I’d seen,
What I knew, I could never unknow,
The images etched, the stories haunting,
A truth that continued to grow.

Palestine, you opened my eyes to the plight,
To the harsh reality many choose to ignore,
And in that moment, my curiosity awakened,
A quest for truth that would endure evermore.

For in the heart of that ancient, torn land,
I found the seeds of my questioning tree,
And I vowed to never turn a blind eye,
To the cries of humanity, to the plea to be free.
