The Bridge Between Woke and Real

April 7, 2025

There’s something I’ve been thinking about lately that feels like the missing piece in today’s social and political discourse: where is the middle ground between being “woke” and being “real”? Somewhere between cancel culture and cold capitalism, there’s space for empathy with action, compassion with a plan.

Being woke has gotten a bad rep—not because the foundation of it is flawed, but because somewhere along the line, it got disconnected from practical outcomes. Empathy became a feeling instead of a force. And in a world addicted to results, metrics, and bottom lines, feelings without structure get dismissed. It’s not that people don’t care—it’s that they don’t know how to care in a way that makes sense within the systems we live in.

At work, for example, kindness isn’t easily quantified. How do you put a number on supporting a colleague who’s burned out, grieving, or just going through a rough patch? Yet we know that psychological safety boosts productivity in the long run. We know that healthy minds innovate more, stay longer, and bring more to the table. But again—how do we show that in a way that satisfies the culture of instantaneous gratification?

This is where I think progressive voices—particularly Democrats—miss an opportunity. There’s a powerful foundation of empathy and justice, but the message often stops there. People are tired of slogans. They want to know: how does this help my household? My job? My future? Survival is still a priority, no matter how evolved our values may be.

We’ve all seen the metaphorical plane crash—when the system fails, when food runs out, when resources are scarce. And we know what people are capable of when they’re pushed to the edge. We don’t need another “awareness campaign.” We need leaders—political, corporate, and community—who can translate compassion into sustainable policy and action.

That bridge between understanding and execution is what’s missing. And no one seems strong enough—or unified enough—to build it. Independents lack the numbers. The right has the system. And Bernie… well, Bernie’s been carrying the truth torch for decades, but how long can we expect him to keep doing it?

The middle ground exists. We just need to give it structure. Because caring without clarity isn’t enough—and capitalism without compassion is empty. It’s time to build the bridge.
