There’s a difference between being hurt by someone and being hurt through someone.
This quote by Don Miguel Ruiz hits a tender truth: most of the time, it’s not what’s being said that causes pain—it’s what it awakens in us. Unhealed wounds, buried emotions, things we haven’t fully faced yet. Still, when words land hard, our human instinct is to react, blame, defend. That’s normal. That’s being human.
But awareness? That’s the bridge. It reminds us to pause and ask, why did that hurt so much? Was it the person, or was it something within me?
It’s easier said than done not to take things personally. But maybe the discomfort is an invitation—not to shut down, but to look within.
That’s the real work.
