When the System Assumes You’re Whole

Every system built by human beings carries a hidden assumption inside it: that the people operating it are, at some basic level, whole.

Not perfect. Not without bias or ambition. Whole. Grounded. Capable of self-reflection. Able to distinguish between personal gain and collective responsibility. Able to feel, at some level, the weight of the power they hold.

The United States Constitution is a masterpiece of structural thinking. Separation of powers. Checks and balances. A Supreme Court insulated from electoral pressure. These were serious ideas, seriously constructed.

Read the fine print, however, and you find the assumption hiding there: that the humans inside the machine would bring a baseline of psychological health to their role. That the person nominating justices would be moved by something larger than self-interest. That senators would be stewards, not operators. That power would be held, not hoarded.

Nobody wrote that down. They didn’t think they had to.

Here is what happens when that assumption fails. When a leader is not whole, not self-aware, not capable of genuine introspection, not conscious of the difference between their wounds and their judgment, the system does not correct for it. It accommodates it. Then it amplifies it. Broken people in power attract other broken people. Insecurity recognizes insecurity. A leader who consolidates power through fear, loyalty tests, and the quiet erosion of norms will draw toward them exactly the people who want to use a position for leverage rather than service.

This is not a political argument. It is a human one.

We have spent centuries designing institutions and almost no time asking who we are handing them to. We have built elaborate mechanisms for the transfer of power and almost none for assessing the psychological fitness of those who hold it.

We assume that ambition, intelligence, and legal credentials are sufficient. We do not ask whether someone can sit quietly with themselves. Whether they have ever been genuinely accountable to another person.

Whether they know the difference between strength and domination.
The Supreme Court nomination process did not fail because the rules were wrong. It failed because the rules were written for people the rules cannot create.

Every system is only as healthy as the humans inside it. Until we are willing to ask harder questions about who those humans are, not just what they believe but who they are at their core, we will keep redesigning the architecture and ignoring the foundation.

The foundation is the human being. That is where the work begins.
