To the Ones Who Can’t Unsee It

My heart goes out to the neurodivergent people who can see the fucking pattern.

You know what I mean.

You look around at what is happening in this country, in the world, in our institutions, in leadership, in the way human beings are treating one another, and something in your brain keeps connecting the dots.

One thing leads to another.

A bad decision connects to another bad decision.

A lie requires another lie.

Wrongdoing gets buried instead of confronted.

Cruelty gets renamed as policy.

People are treated like they are disposable, and everyone finds a sophisticated way of explaining why it is somehow acceptable.

Meanwhile, millions of people just keep going.

They can still buy their groceries.

The electricity is still on.

Their paycheck still arrives.

Their favorite restaurant is still open.

So everything must be fine.

And sometimes I feel like I am standing on the fucking Titanic watching people rearrange the deck chairs because the bar is still serving drinks.

That is the part that gets me.

Not simply that terrible things happen. Humanity has always been capable of terrible things.

It is the lack of curiosity.

The denial.

The complete absence of interest in asking where all of this leads.

Because patterns have consequences.

You cannot keep making destructive decisions and expect destruction never to arrive.

You cannot normalize corruption and expect institutions to remain trustworthy.

You cannot normalize cruelty and expect cruelty to remain conveniently confined to somebody else.

You cannot keep stripping people of dignity and somehow assume your own dignity will always be protected.

Eventually the thing you tolerated because it was happening to someone else develops teeth.

And it bites everybody.

For some neurodivergent minds, this is especially exhausting.

Not because we possess some magical ability to know everything. We don’t.

We can be wrong.

We can misread things.

We can become overwhelmed.

Yet many of us have brains that relentlessly search for patterns, inconsistencies, contradictions and systems underneath systems.

When something does not add up, it scratches at the inside of the brain.

When somebody’s words contradict their behavior, we notice.

When the official explanation does not match the observable pattern, we notice.

When the same behavior keeps producing the same consequences, we cannot simply pretend each event exists in isolation.

We connect it.

That can be a gift.

It can also be fucking exhausting.

Because one of the loneliest experiences in the world is seeing a pattern that feels screamingly obvious and watching everyone around you behave as though nothing is happening.

Then you start questioning yourself.

Am I overreacting?

Am I too sensitive?

Am I obsessing?

Why does nobody else seem alarmed?

And sometimes the answer may genuinely be that we are interpreting something incorrectly.

We have to leave room for that.

Yet sometimes people aren’t missing the pattern because it isn’t there.

Sometimes they are missing it because seeing it would require them to change something.

Their worldview.

Their comfort.

Their politics.

Their relationships.

Their assumptions.

Their understanding of who the “good people” are.

Denial is incredibly convenient when reality has not reached your front door yet.

That is why my heart goes out to the neurodivergent people sitting with that strange combination of clarity, anger, grief and disbelief right now.

The ones saying:

How can you not see where this goes?

How can you not see what we are becoming?

How can you watch people be degraded and still believe it will somehow stop neatly at the boundary of people you don’t care about?

How can you keep calling every incident an exception when the exceptions have become the fucking pattern?

I don’t have an answer for you.

I only know this.

Do not confuse everybody else’s comfort with evidence that you are imagining what you see.

At the same time, keep questioning yourself too.

Check the evidence.

Stay curious.

Be willing to be wrong.

Pattern recognition without humility becomes paranoia.

Pattern recognition with curiosity becomes understanding.

And perhaps that is what we need most right now.

People willing to look beyond the individual headline.

Beyond today’s outrage.

Beyond whatever makes life temporarily comfortable.

People willing to ask the uncomfortable question:

If this pattern continues, where does it end?

Because a sinking ship rarely announces itself with one dramatic moment.

Sometimes it is a thousand small warnings.

And the tragedy is not that nobody could see them.

It is that too many people decided they didn’t want to.
