Democracy or Fear-Driven Control?

February 28, 2025

What does democracy even mean anymore? If a government can dictate how someone identifies, deny their existence, or strip away their dignity, then what are we really standing for? How does someone else’s identity affect anyone but the person living it? And yet, laws are passed, voices are silenced, and leaders—who should be for all people—decide that some lives matter less.

How does Elon Musk, with a transgender child, reconcile with the discrimination that people like his own child face? How does a government justify restricting human rights when some of its own leaders lack the moral standing to pass judgment? And how do we call this democracy when it’s built on fear—fear of difference, fear of change, fear of progress?

It’s the same with immigration. People who have built lives here, contributed, and taken the legal path are being treated like criminals. Meanwhile, many citizens won’t even take minimum-wage jobs, yet we demonize those who will work harder for less just for a chance to belong. A child living in fear that their parents could be taken away—this isn’t democracy. It’s a fear-based system that punishes the most vulnerable while turning a blind eye to real corruption.

Maybe it’s time to redefine what democracy actually means in the U.S. Because right now, it’s looking a lot more like control than freedom.
