Expanding Normal

September 27, 2025

The majority of people are neurotypical. That means the way they think, communicate, and process the world fits into what society calls “normal.” But “normal” is just the majority’s way of being, not the only way.

For those who are neurodiverse, life often feels like living in a house designed for someone else. Every corner asks you to adjust, bend, or conform. And on top of that constant effort comes judgment, from those who can’t see beyond their own lens.

But neurodiversity is simply another expression of how human brains work. The human being is complex, with unique needs, strengths, and sensitivities. Some of the world’s most brilliant innovations, deepest insights, and most authentic expressions come from neurodiverse minds.

The real challenge is a world unwilling to expand its definition of “normal.” And until more people realize that, it will remain a chaotic place where judgment overshadows understanding.

Maybe it’s time to stop asking neurodiverse people to fit in and start asking how society can open up enough space for everyone to belong.
