The Epstein story raises a much bigger question than who knew whom, who appears in which file, or which intelligence theory eventually proves true.

It raises the question of human vulnerability and power.

A democracy can have elections, constitutions, institutions, checks and balances, and laws. But every one of those systems is ultimately operated by human beings.

And human beings can be compromised.

Money. Sex. Ego. Fear. Status. Secrets. The need to belong. The fear of losing power. These are not political ideologies. They are human weaknesses. And when someone with enormous power can be controlled through one of them, the institution they represent becomes vulnerable too.

That is why character matters.

We spend enormous amounts of time debating left versus right, Democrat versus Republican, country versus country. Perhaps one of the more important filters is simpler:

Who is this human being when nobody is watching?

We may never completely know.

But watch what they do when telling the truth costs them something. Watch whether they protect the powerful or the powerless. Watch whether their principles survive when those principles become inconvenient.

Because eventually, every system, every institution, and every democracy comes down to the same thing:

the human beings entrusted with its power.
