Redefining Awkward

June 16, 2025

Who gets to decide what’s “awkward,” really?

We throw the term around like a label we’ve all silently agreed on—especially if we’re more reserved, more internal, more “introverted.” But maybe what’s truly awkward is having to contort ourselves to fit into social environments that don’t bring us joy, that drain us, or worse—where we feel we must perform to belong.

The truth is, many people perform unconsciously. It’s not wrong, it’s just common. But if you’re aware of yourself, aware of your space, your limits, your preferences—that’s not awkward. That’s intentional. And intention is power.

As I’ve gotten older, through the mess and beauty of lived experience, I care less about fitting a mold created by people who’ve never walked in my shoes. Our makeups—emotional, energetic, neurobiological—are all different. So if we accept that we’re each unique, why keep comparing?

Maybe the question isn’t “Should I be more social?” but “Am I being true to myself?” And maybe it’s time to stop using borrowed language to define our own story.

Speak with intention. Live with awareness. And don’t let the world shrink you into something you’re not.
