The Humanity in Preaching

January 16, 2025

Sometimes, we encounter people who seem to be “preaching,” and it annoys us. Their words might feel intrusive or misplaced, sparking irritation or judgment. But what if we paused for a moment and considered their story? What if their words come not from arrogance, but from pain—a pain they’ve transformed into light?

It’s true, some have exploited this path, using the guise of wisdom to manipulate or con others, leaving a trail of broken trust. And trust, once shattered, is hard to repair. Those with good intentions often bear the brunt of skepticism because of the harm caused by a few.

Still, it’s worth reminding ourselves not to lump everyone into the same category. Just as we wouldn’t judge someone of a different faith for sharing their beliefs, we can approach these moments with curiosity instead of judgment. Maybe the person preaching has survived something unimaginable and is now trying to help others. Maybe their words, even if they don’t resonate with us, carry hope for someone else.

We don’t have to agree with everyone, but we can respect their humanity. In a world often divided, pausing to understand instead of judge could be the smallest, yet most meaningful, contribution we make. Because in the end, humanity must win. That’s what we should aim for.
