The Untold Story Between Jobs

August 31, 2024

Resumes are often the first and sometimes only filter through which hiring managers assess candidates. Titles, positions, skills—these are the metrics used to measure someone’s potential. But in this process, something crucial gets overlooked: the story between jobs.

We rarely ask about the gaps, the transitions, the choices made between roles. This isn’t just an omission—it’s a reflection of an unconscious, almost robotic way of hiring, driven by what’s expected rather than what’s meaningful. How many of us actually pause and question if this approach even makes sense? Are we truly present and aware of the person sitting across from us, or are we just ticking boxes?

Consider this: a skilled narcissist knows exactly what to say, how to behave, and how to adapt their image to fit a job description. They can tailor their presentation to get hired, masking any red flags behind a veneer of perfection. On the other hand, a genuinely authentic person may not possess that same finesse in positioning themselves. They might not play the game as effectively, leading to a missed opportunity for both the candidate and the company.

But this isn’t just about hiring the wrong or right person—it’s about the deeper issue of whether we’re really seeing what’s right in front of us. Are we conscious of the decisions we’re making, or are we operating on autopilot? Do we understand why we ask the questions we do, or are we just following a script written by tradition?

If we’re not fully present in these moments, we risk missing the true value of the person in front of us. The real story often lies in the spaces between the roles, in the decisions made and the experiences lived when no one was watching. But are we aware enough to see it?
