Two Shades of Emotional Intelligence

July 4, 2025

Not all emotional intelligence is the same. I’ve come to realize that there are subtle but important differences—differences you don’t always see at first glance.

Some people are emotionally intelligent as a way to protect themselves. They’re highly observant, read every room, decode every expression. But if you look closer, you’ll see their awareness often stems from self-preservation. It’s a shield. A survival mechanism. Their emotional attunement is less about you—and more about staying safe.

Then there are others whose emotional intelligence is rooted in understanding. They observe not to defend, but to connect. Their listening is laced with curiosity. They feel deeply because it’s true.

Both may look similar on the outside. But one is driven by fear. The other by openness.

Just something to sit with next time you find yourself labeling someone as “emotionally intelligent.” The why behind it matters.
