We Don’t Deserve Them

June 26, 2025

Sometimes, I wonder what we ever did to deserve animals. Their loyalty, their innocence, their unconditional love—none of it is contingent on our worthiness. They simply give. And too often, we take.

I see videos of dogs chasing after the cars of people who abandoned them. They don’t understand why. You can see the confusion in their eyes, the heartbreak in their bodies as they run after someone they trusted. It’s one of the most painful things to witness, and it makes me question the capacity for cruelty in human nature.

I’ll say it plainly: I’d trust animals over humans, any day. They don’t lie. They don’t manipulate. They just want to be loved and to love in return.

Animal cruelty is a failure of humanity. No creature should ever suffer at the hands of those they trust. We should be their guardians, not their betrayers. If you can’t offer compassion, don’t take responsibility for a life that feels pain just like we do.

Animals are better than us. Kinder than we deserve. And the truth is, we’re lucky they still let us in.
