The layer missing from every AI ecosystem isn’t a better model. It isn’t a faster chip or a smarter benchmark. It’s people who can stand in the space between the system and the human, and actually translate, not just technically, but psychologically, philosophically, morally. Right now, that space is a vacuum. And vacuums don’t stay empty for long.
The people building AI at the infrastructure level, the researchers training models, tuning weights, iterating on architectures — are solving the problems they can see from where they sit. That’s not a criticism; it’s physics. Your field of vision is bounded by your position. The people building on top of those models are, for the most part, running a land grab. We’ve seen this before: the internet wave, the mobile wave, the cloud wave. The template is familiar. Move fast, capture users, figure out harm later. What’s different this time is the velocity. AI isn’t moving like a wave. It’s moving like a pressure front, and it’s compressing the time between deployment and consequence down to nearly nothing.

In between the builders and the profiteers sits everyone else, billions of people trying to make sense of a global situation that is already, independent of AI, not conducive to the kind of clear-headed, present, grounded thinking you need to evaluate any of this. Fear is a hell of a market. The less anchored people are, the more susceptible they become. This is not a coincidence. It is, in some cases, a feature.

Here is the truth that doesn’t get said plainly enough: you cannot build human-centered AI systems without people who actually understand human beings — not as users, not as data points, not as conversion events, but as organisms carrying unresolved trauma, tribal loyalties, cognitive biases, and a deep hunger for meaning that no product has ever successfully monetized without eventually distorting. Sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, behavioral scientists, these are not soft additions to a hard technical project. They are the connective tissue the whole thing is missing.
The problem is structural. Self-awareness is distributed unevenly, and trauma is a decision-maker that doesn’t announce itself. When someone is not operating from a place of self-knowledge, their unexamined wounds become policy. Their blind spots become product decisions. Their fear of irrelevance becomes an acquisition strategy. The downstream effects land on people who had no seat at the table — people who lose not just a job but an identity, a routine, a sense of being necessary in the world.

The translators we need are not therapists for machines. They are people with the genuine moral architecture, not the performed kind, not the LinkedIn kind — to hold both worlds in view simultaneously. To understand what the engineers are actually building and what it will feel like to a 52-year-old warehouse worker in Toledo, or a radiologist in Jakarta, or a paralegal in London whose entire skill set just became a prompt. To ask the question: what are we actually doing to people, and does that matter to us?
The answer to that last question sorts people very quickly. There are those whose conscience functions as a correction mechanism — they can make wrong decisions and get pulled back. Then there are those for whom speed and self-interest have become the whole operating system. You will not reach the second group through moral argument. They’re not listening; they’re already moving. The only thing that reaches them is consequence, and consequence in AI is running about three to five years behind deployment.

So what do we actually do with this? The honest answer is: we find and elevate the people who exist in the middle. Not the ones who perform ethics in quarterly reports and leave it there. The ones who have genuinely done the interior work, who know who they are separate from their incentive structure, who can walk into a room of engineers and a room of affected communities and be credible in both. They exist. They’re just not the loudest people in the building right now, because loudness currently belongs to whoever is moving fastest.
The divide is widening. That’s not rhetoric; it’s observable. The acceleration of AI is functioning like a centrifuge — it’s separating things that used to stay mixed together. What’s left in the middle, under pressure, is the question of what kind of civilization we’re actually trying to build, and whether anyone with the power to answer that question is bothering to ask it.
The translators are the people who ask it anyway. Find them. Become one. The technical problems will get solved …they always do. The human ones are harder, slower, and nobody is funding them at scale.
