Pain Is Necessary for Healing

January 22, 2025

Healing is a complex journey. What we think is helpful—taking away someone’s pain—may not always be. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of honoring emotions. They are like a GPS for the soul, pointing to where the pain or blind spots lie, guiding us to where healing is needed.

As hard as it is to watch someone you care about go through pain, it’s essential to let them face it. Pain doesn’t disappear when swept under the rug—it resurfaces until confronted. When we try to take over or solve their pain, we rob them of the opportunity to grow. Their healing becomes incomplete, and the cycle repeats for both of you.

Perhaps the best thing we can do is hold space. Acknowledge that pain is part of the process and trust that facing it is the only way through.

Food for thought: How might our well-intentioned actions sometimes hinder someone else’s growth?
