“Be Human” — But Do We Even Know What That Means Anymore?

July 20, 2025

There’s something deeply unsettling about the way people consume the misery of others—especially when it’s packaged as entertainment. A private moment of two human beings unraveling in public at a concert became a viral joke overnight. No names needed—you already know the story. And that’s part of the problem.

We repost, we reshare, we meme it into oblivion. And for what? A laugh? A “hot take”? I’ve even seen people breaking down the cost of the fallout—what a divorce would cost, what the PR damage is worth. But no one’s calculating the emotional toll. No one’s measuring the trauma.

These aren’t headlines. They’re human beings.

It’s not about whether someone made a mistake. Mistakes are human. Leaders mess up. HR execs mess up. You and I mess up. But the crowd that circles, picks apart, and shames—that’s not justice. That’s cruelty disguised as commentary.

What’s worse is how comfortable we’ve become in it. We preach empathy and compassion, yet we feast on another’s downfall like it’s dessert.

So yeah—if this is what it means to be “human” in today’s world, I’d rather be kind to animals. At least they don’t pretend kindness and then weaponize it.

If your household is peaceful, your relationship solid—be grateful. Be quiet. Be supportive. Or be silent.

We can do better. We have to do better.
