Just Thinking About Truth and Fear

September 22, 2025

Saw this quote from Bayard Rustin today: “To be afraid is to behave as if the truth were not true.” It stopped me in my tracks. I’m not trying to preach or teach here, just thinking out loud.

We all say we want honesty, from politics to friendships. But I catch myself wondering, how often do I dodge my own truths? There’s probably a lot most of us don’t want to admit, maybe even to ourselves. Sometimes I look around at the noise, arguments, debates and think, do any of us really know where our own biases end and honesty begins?

I don’t have the answers, and I’m not telling anyone what to do. It just seems like wrestling with our own truths is messy, and that’s okay. Maybe sharing this thought is enough for now
