Unlearning the Puppet Show

November 10, 2025

We rent our mouths like billboards and call it a personality. The slogans change, the lease remains, and the quiet terrain beneath never gets a chance to grow its own language. If the voice inside you sounds like a podcast host you’ve never met, that is not a coincidence; that is muscle memory trained by applause you did not earn. Sit with the silence long enough for the echo to die, then ask a question that has no audience. Who are you when no one nods back.

Influence is not evil; it’s just sticky. We pretend it’s wisdom because it arrives prepackaged with certainty and a logo. Mimicry feels safe the way a mask does: breathable, convincing, and just thin enough to forget you put it on. The cost is subtle—micro-abandonments of your own instincts that add up like interest until your life becomes a derivative product. Originals aren’t born; they default on everyone else’s debt.

Here’s an uncomfortable exercise: pick one belief you borrow for status; politics, hustle, wellness, whatever and abstain for thirty days. No posts, no quotes, no “as someone who.” Let it go hungry and see if it still visits you at night. If it starves, it wasn’t a belief; it was a performance rider. If it survives, feed it your attention, not your brand.

Leaders, lovers, creators, the brave ones do something radical: they stop auditioning. They trade the cheap high of recognition for the long ache of reality testing. They lose followers and find a spine. They get quiet enough to hear the unlicensed sound of their own thinking, then ship work that doesn’t beg for claps. This is not efficient. It is human.

Today, try this heresy: refuse to be quotable. Be difficult to summarize. Let people misread you and let the algorithm shrug. When the crowd asks for mirrors, hand them windows. When they ask for certainty, offer an honest bruise. If it’s true that most people are other people, the smallest revolution is to be one fewer.
