Empathy without discernment can become self-abandonment.
One of the hardest lessons I am learning is that understanding someone’s pain does not mean I have to protect them from the consequences of their choices.
I can be curious about the why. I can recognize the wounds that may have shaped them. I can understand what sits beneath their behavior.
But understanding the cause does not erase the impact.
For a long time, I believed that if I could understand someone deeply enough, I should continue making space for them. I gave their explanations more weight than their patterns, and their potential more weight than their actions.
Now I am learning to trust what I observe.
Discernment is not the absence of empathy. It is the moment empathy develops a boundary. It is allowing someone to carry what belongs to them without carrying it for them.
Perhaps this is where loving yourself begins.
You do not become colder.
You simply stop confusing compassion with responsibility.
You observe. You understand. You accept what their actions have revealed.
Then you move on.
Not harder.
Just clearer.
