Maybe They’re Not Broken. Maybe They’re Selective.

You know the person. The cousin who skips the family gathering. The coworker who never joins the group chat banter. The friend who seems to disappear for months at a time. Somewhere along the way, someone decided this person is a loner, and the label sticks: something must be wrong with them.

I want to offer another read.

I am inconvenient to anyone who wants to feel comfortable. Inconvenient to anyone who wants to stay in denial and look the other way. I know this about myself now.

There was a time I would have thrown myself at people to prove I belonged. I don’t do that anymore. It makes me feel good to hold back, actually. That should tell you something. Holding back is not the wound people assume it is.

It makes me selective, not damaged.

My best self shows up around people who aren’t afraid of discomfort and can hand that discomfort back to me in equal measure. I’m not afraid of being uncomfortable either. If anything, I get curious. Those are my people: the intellectually curious ones.

Curiosity doesn’t require a high IQ. We all have areas where we know more, and areas where we know less. I refuse to call the second category “weaknesses.” Call it curiosity waiting for permission.

Here’s the part people skip: how a question lands is not the responsibility of the person asking it. It belongs to the person receiving it. If someone reacts badly to your curiosity, that reaction describes them in that moment. It does not define you, and it definitely doesn’t define your question.

I had to learn that the hard way. For years I absorbed other people’s definitions of me. Something’s wrong with her. She’s too much. She’s too intense. I believed it long enough to shrink myself trying to disprove it.

Now I know I spent real time in places, with people, trying too hard to fit into rooms that never once tried to fit me back in. That’s not a character flaw. That’s just math nobody taught me to do sooner.

Do I want connection? Completely. I’m not interested in performing it. Surface conversation bores me to the bone, and I’m not sorry about that. Some of that is wiring. Some of it is just knowing what I’m actually here for.

So next time you catch yourself writing off the quiet one, the one who left the party early, the relative who never quite “clicks” with the group, consider a different question. Not “what’s wrong with them.” Try “what are they protecting.”

Curiosity works both directions.

I used to write a lot about spirituality. Understanding. Detachment. Looking inward. I still believe in looking inward. I’m just increasingly tired of how...
