Pattern-recognition-superpower

July 15, 2026

There was a version of me who heard a friendly voice on the phone and believed the friendliness was the whole story. Warm tone, easy laugh, nothing to worry about. That version of me took people at the surface because the surface was all I knew how to read.

That’s not who I am anymore.

Healing didn’t just soften me. It sharpened something. Understanding my own neurodivergence gave me a kind of vision I didn’t have before, not a metaphor, an actual shift in what I notice. I can watch someone control a room while sounding like the most agreeable person in it. I can hear the gap between what a person is saying and what they’re actually doing with the conversation. Before, I would have called that gap confusing. Now I call it what it is. A power move, dressed in friendliness so it never has to answer for itself.

This is not a gift most people go looking for. Nobody signs up to see the mechanics behind someone’s charm. But once you see it, you cannot unsee it, and that changes everything about how you spend yourself.

I used to think being perceptive meant I owed people an explanation of what I saw. I’d name the pattern, hoping if I just said it clearly enough, the person would meet me there. They rarely did. I spent years handing people a mirror and waiting for them to look into it.

I don’t do that anymore.

Here’s what changed. I stopped needing to be right in front of someone who was never going to see it. I stopped mistaking my own clarity for a project I had to complete with someone else’s participation. Seeing the pattern is enough now. I don’t need to call it out, argue it, or wait for someone to catch up to what I already know. The understanding is mine. It doesn’t require their agreement to be true.

Human beings are complicated, and most people are doing the best they can with what they’ve got, which is sometimes very little. That’s not an insult. It’s just information. You learn who has capacity and who doesn’t, who meets you and who performs meeting you, and once you know, the only real decision left is where you spend your time.

Not a second of it goes to someone who’s already shown you they can’t or won’t be honest with you. Not one more explanation, not one more olive branch held out and watched go untouched. You get one chest full of feeling to give away in this life. Give it to people who know what they’re holding.

I didn’t get here by getting the other person to change. I got here by changing what I was willing to accept, and by trusting what I could finally see clearly instead of doubting myself out of it.

That combination, the perception and the self trust, is not a wound anymore. It’s the thing that protects me now. If you’re on this road too, still doubting what you’re seeing, still trying to get someone to meet you honestly when they’ve already shown you they won’t, I want you to know it gets clearer. Not because they change. Because you stop needing them to.

I used to write a lot about spirituality. Understanding. Detachment. Looking inward. I still believe in looking inward. I’m just increasingly tired of how...
